It was 100 years ago when the United Nations put forth a day to celebrate the economic, political, and social achievements of Women past, present, and future. In places such as China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women's Day is a National Holiday. This marks the 6th year WIFTI joins in that celebration with our Short Film Showcase. These films have first been selected by the participating WIFTI Chapters from submissions created by their members. Each Chapters' selections were sent to the WIFTI screening committee to compile this, the 2011 Showcase Program. The films were all truly wonderful and WIFTI congratulates all the filmmakers on their efforts. We hope this inspires you to make your own film for next year's celebration.

Two student filmmakers were honored October 8th at the 8th Annual Chick Flicks Film Festival held by the non-profit organization Women In Film.Dallas. Two student filmmakers were honored October 8th at the 8th Annual Chick Flicks Film Festival held by the non-profit organization Women In Film.Dallas.

Each year the festival features short films created and produced by women across the state of Texas, celebrating the work of women in the film industry while raising funds for female students studying film, television, or video production in the North Texas region.

The 2009 winners are Elizabeth Johnston of Southern Methodist University and Rachel Gibson Shepherd of the University of Texas at Arlington.

Ms. Johnston was awarded a $2500 tuition scholarship and Ms. Shepherd was selected to receive the college student project grant of $5,000 in completion funds from both WIF.D and Sync Point Post, a Dallas-based post- production house.

"The quality of applicants made the selection process extremely difficult. The WIF.D Education Committee was greatly impressed with the level of professionalism they exhibited which bodes well for the industry as a whole,” said Lynne Reynolds, co-chair of the WIF.D Education Committee. “We sincerely hope they have found our organization to be a useful resource during their education and beyond. Women in Film Dallas will continue to proudly support the endeavors of these young women as they advance into their chosen careers.”

To learn how you can apply for the scholarships to be awarded in 2010 or are looking for an internship in the industry, please contact education@wifdallas.org or visit www.wifdallas.org for more information.

WIF.D Scholarship Winners Announced!

Meet our 2008 Award Winners!

singh_photo.jpg$3500 Project Completion Funds
Arvind Singh – UNT

Arvind was born to a theatre couple, raised on the stage.  Her father is a well known Punjabi Playwright and as stage Director used theatre as a tool of mass awareness.  She was actively involved with his group as an actor and organizer.  Traveling with him from village to village with the theatre group, she noticed the effect of the art although limited because it reached only a small section of society.  Arvind wanted to reach more people in India and throughout the world but was unsure what creative medium to use.

From this frustration and her idealism, she began practicing law at the age of 22.  However, her dream of changing the world crumbled when she realized that the people who needed help the most or were victims of a corrupt society were often unaware that they’d been wronged.  Returning to her original idea, she had to find a creative and wide ranging awareness tool that was stimulating and would help the people understand the corrupt system in which they lived.

Documentary films seemed to be the viable answer and this realization gave birth to her first production company in India named Srijan (To Create).  She faced many obstacles because it was impossible to get grants or any financial aid for what she wanted to achieve.  Finally the situation in Punjab deteriorated due to State oppression and the people’s retaliation to State terrorism.  Arvind ended up making a documentary on this subject but it offended the watchdogs of the system and she decided to move to America.

Wanting to continue to make films, she decided to learn the craft aspect of the art and joined the Masters of Fine Arts program with the University of North Texas.  Women In Film.Dallas has provided finishing funds for her film, “The Rising Tide” through the 2008 scholarship program.  In the introduction of her business plan Arvind wrote, “Amidst the deafening noise created by the mainstream American media, some people are trying to recover the voice of the people that has the ultimate power to question the actions of their system.  Ironically, this muffled voice never reaches the outside world creating an impression that American people are either too complacent or ignorant towards the miseries of the rest of the world...”  Clearly, the talents of Arvind Singh can change that misconception.

vance.jpg.jpg$1500 Tuition Scholarship
Sharie Vance – UT Arlington

When Sharie Vance submitted her essay with her WIF.D Scholarship application, she chose the title “Making a Difference” and in her opening line she quotes Abraham Maslow: “A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself.  What one can be, one must be.”

While raising her family of 4, Sharie took jobs strictly for the income.  After her children were grown she realized she could no longer force herself to work at jobs that had no meaning.  Always wanting to creatively express herself and make a difference in the world, Sharie had been raised to believe that one could not do both at the same time – that it wasn’t practical.  After putting together a video for a past employer, she discovered an outlet for her talents but it took over a year to develop the courage to go back to school and pursue something that wasn’t “practical”.

As a student she has watched herself do things she’s never thought possible, such as making a short film, two music videos and a documentary called “Shelter Walkers”.  It was her reaction to this documentary about animal rescue that wiped away any lingering doubts.  She has had an overwhelming  response from people who were moved by the story she wrote and produced which has resulted in saving the lives of countless animals in North Texas.  In her own eyes, something even better has happened.  Sharie’s children now think of her as their hero, inspired by her example to strive for their own dreams.  Women In Film.Dallas is proud to award Sharie Vance the tuition scholarship as she continues to grow as a filmmaker.

WomenInFilm.Dallas and the Dallas Women's Foundation are proud to present filmmaker Libby Spears' acclaimed documentary, "Playground," followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker, on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at Studio Movie Grill - Royal Lane.

"Wherever drugs are being sold, children are being sold."

           - Eileen Jacobs, FBI

Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery that affects both Americans and foreigners, according to Children At Risk, the Houston-based advocacy and research center. It affects everyone, but women and children are its most vulnerable victims. And while human trafficking is a relatively unknown issue, Texas has become a hub for the international crime because of its interstate highways, bus stations, airports, shipping, a large amount of sexually oriented businesses, and its shared border with Mexico.

"For $1,500, you can rent a ten year-old for the weekend."

            - Portland, OR

Spears' "Playground" is a hard-hitting, investigative look at the sex trade and human trafficking in the United States. She tempers hard-hitting facts and stark statistics with innovative animation and a thoughtful soundtrack, including music by Bjork, Radiohead, Chris Martin, Blonde Redhead, Cat Power, Sigur Rós, CocoRosie, Basement Jaxx, DJ Shadow, and Kazu Makino.

Executive Produced by Dallas philanthropists Lauren & Gayle Embrey, as well as George Clooney, Grant Heslov, Steven Soderbergh, Abby Disney, and Jeff Vespa, the film gracefully weaves together expert interviews with personal stories. At the heart of it lies Michelle, an American girl lost to the underbelly of childhood sexual exploitation who has yet to resurface a decade later.

The screening begins at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a Q&A from the filmmaker. Tickets are $5 for members and SMU students and $8 for nonmembers. Nonprofits are invited to purchase blocks of tickets at the discounted member price. For more information, please email chickflicks@wifdallas.org or publicity@wifdallas.org.

The Chick Flicks Film Series is the primary fundraiser for WIF.D's two yearly scholarships, awarded every fall to Texas women studying media production.

Through The Bridge, Omar learned that about 2,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year in men. A Tale for Shmuli was named Best Student Short at last September’s Thin Line Film Festival in Denton.

Omar Milano is a graduate student at the University of North Texas, pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree in documentary production. His primary interest is location sound mixing and recording. Omar is currently in production of his thesis documentary, about the history of production sound for film.

Upon learning disturbing news, Mark and Jeannie, a young engaged couple, decide to investigate the deepest recesses of their hill country ranch. Soon they discover a strange house and a mysterious paternal connection begins to unfold. Will Mark Noble determine if love is stronger than pride?

Taama is a producer/director with GETmill, Inc. where she specializes in industrial videos focusing on architectural visualization, commercial, sports, and healthcare facilities, as well as capital campaign fundraising, training, marketing, sales, advertising, and technical videos. illtakecareofyouweb.jpgI’ll Take Care of You by Angie Alexander
Imagine being alone and lost in the piney woods of east Texas. The sun is going down and you make a call to your satellite navigation provider because they always put you on the right path. . . . right? I’ll Take Care of You is a fun ride for any woman who has dreamed of getting even.

After working for the BBC and Stephen Spielberg’s Shoah Foundation, Texas native Angie Alexander founded Tempest Production Company to create educational films and documentaries.  She’s directed a series of historical docs for the Irving Independent School district as well as the city’s official centennial documentary.   Angie recently formed a new company, A Girl and a Camera Productions (funny story behind the name…you should ask her about it!) to handle the narrative projects in conjunction with Tempest Productions.

Updated - June 2009

Check out the photos here in our WIF.D Gallery! filmmakers_june.jpgAnd check out our interviews by the filmmakers with Chris at ShortFilmTexas.com!

Four films by WomenInFilm.Dallas members screened to a packed audience on Thursday, June 18 at Studio Movie Grill in Addison.

The films included Omar Milano's A Tale for Shmuli, A Noble Way by Taama Forasiepi and David Brehm, Women @ Work by Anna Bussart-Dewell, and I'll Take Care of You by Angie Alexander. Milano, Forasiepi, and Alexander attended the screening, while Jennifer Horst, the editor of Women @ Work represented the film in lieu of Bussart-Dewell.

"We really had a great time at the screening!" said Taama Forasiepi, producer of A Noble Way. "The WIF.D team did a great job organizing, publishing, and presenting the movies.  Each movie had its own unique and endearing qualities. Thanks to WIF.D for supporting local filmmakers."

Chick Flicks is WomenInFilm.Dallas' year-long film series and the primary fundraiser for our annual scholarships, which are awarded every fall to female college students and applicants studying film, television, or video production in the North Texas region.

"As a former scholarship winner, I can attest to the importance of WIF.D's annual scholarship," said Jessica Schoenbaechler, WIF.D board member and Chick Flicks co-chair. "It made all the difference in the resources to which I had access and motivating me to finish my thesis film. I'm so pleased to know that audiences not only love watching films by our very own members but that they also feel strongly about supporting this cause."

Prior to the program, WIF.D gave away some cool raffle prizes including Kim Adelman's The Ultimate Filmmaker's Guide to Short Films: Making it Big in Shorts from Michael Wiese Productions, a pass for ten free yoga sessions at the Belt Line Dahn Yoga Center, spa services from The Spa at II Creeks, passes to Four Funny Females, a one-month pass to Laurel Whitsett's acting classes, four tickets to the upcoming production of Chapter Two at Contemporary Theatre, and coupons to Paciugo Gelato.

Afterwards, filmmakers, fans, and WIF.D members mingled, celebrating the filmmakers and providing comments to Chris Weidner of www.shortfilmtexas.com. "I would have to say attending the June Chick Flicks Film Series was probably one of the best experiences I've had at a Texas film event in recent years. Working with and meeting such a genuine group of people made visiting Dallas and promoting the event all that more rewarding," adds Chris Weidner.

The June Chick Flicks Film Series was sponsored by Studio Movie Grill - Addison and www.shortfilmtexas.com.

We are honored to be showcasing the work of nine exceptionally gifted international directors from four countries. We look forward to marking International Women's Day with audiences across three continents, highlighting the strength of our network and celebrating the filmmaking talents of women worldwide." comments Kimberly Skyrme, Producer of Women in Film and Television’s International’s Short Film Showcase.

“This is one of my favorite events of the year!” exclaims Eileen Hoeter of Vancouver, Canada, current Chair of Women in Film and Television International. “For 25 years, I have been involved in an International Women’s Day celebration, and in all my years nothing matches the vitality of attending the WIFTI Showcase. This is WIFTI's fourth year producing the Showcase and it is always an unbelievable event! It’s truly inspiring to think that women around the world are watching films by women, all together on the same day.”

Women in Film Chapters are participating in China, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Sweden, and 12 cities throughout the U.S. WIF.D will be adding works from local women filmmakers to this list of outstanding films.

As part of the celebration, WIF.D has also teamed with several contributors to share their movies with our audience this Sunday. The Shopping Network QVC, who is also celebrating the 100th Anniversary of International Women's Day, is presenting the Girl Scouts of America with a very generous $250,000 dollar value donation of 25,000 DVD copies of the documentary, "14 Women," which they are also sharing with us.

This is going to be a great event! As one of our new WIF.D members coming up from San Antonio to join us at the WIFTI Showcase put it, "I'm very excited about these movies and I'm looking forward to being in a room full of creative minds."
