COMMENTARY:

For the majority of the TXMPA North Texas constituency, the day’s proceedings started in Dallas at 6:30 AM as colleagues gathered to board a bus.  55 people took the bus journey from Dallas to Austin.  In addition to the bus riders, there were an estimated 40 Dallas-based TXMPA members that made the trek to Austin.  In all, the North Texas TXMPA constituency was approximately 100 members strong.

Upon arrival into Austin, Dallas TXMPA members found a well organized team at the St. Edwards University venue that quickly facilitated check-in, handed-out voting ballots and provided the capability to sign-up as a new TXMPA member.  Mix and mingle ensued until the meeting was called to order at 11:00 AM.

First, Nikki Young, TXMPA, San Antonio Regional Representative, facilitated the day’s proceedings and set forth the overall agenda.

Second, Meredith Stephens, President, TXMPA, presented a “State of TXMPA” overview that incorporated work accomplished during the past 12 months, updates on changes to the organization and observations regarding the path forward.  Kudos were granted to outgoing board members.  Speaking of kudos, one unexpected moment that proved to be a meeting highlight was an impromptu, spontaneous, standing ovation in recognition of Mark Beasley, President, MPS Studios, for his on-going support of TXMPA.

Third, the nomination process for At-Large Board Candidates ensued and resulted in approximately 10 candidates being presented for the 3 open At-Large board seats.  Votes were cast.

Forth, commentary was presented by Neil T. “Buddy” Jones, Owner, HillCo Partners, Brandon Aghamalian, Lobbyist, HillCo Partners, and Bob Hudgins, Director, Texas Film Commission.  It appears that our collective constituency from across the state, supported by a leading lobbying firm, and the state film commission, are coming together in a way that will enable us to achieve greater objectives in 2009.  In short, we will be firing on all cylinders going into the 2009 legislative session.

Finally, voting results were announced.  See the Meeting Outcomes section of this report for details.

For those on the bus, the day’s proceedings ended in Dallas at 7:00 PM as the bus returned safely to port.

As a result of 100 North Texans making the trek to Austin, the outcomes of the TXMPA 2008 Annual Meeting have set in motion a new direction for the Moving Image Incentive Program and the growth of our industry.

THANK YOU:

Many thanks to outgoing TXMPA President, i.e. Meredith Stephens, for her time, effort and insight while serving on the TXMPA Board of Directors.

On a personal note, Meredith Stephens’ presence on the TXMPA Board of Directors will be missed.  Meredith led the TXMPA through a period that was the virtual equivalent of building the Texas State highway system.  Frankly, it was a dirty job.  There was a lot of ground breaking, hauling loads of dirt, moving mountains, negotiating routes and by-passes, negotiating on-ramps and off-ramps, establishing boundaries, painting safety lines, making things concrete, establishing speed limits, and determining jurisdiction.  Despite having to work in the mud in order to pour the foundation, Meredith did it willingly and the result is a united state-wide system from which we all benefit.  Please join us in tipping our virtual hats to Meredith as she moves-on to far more glamorous responsibilities as President of Women in Film-Dallas.

Likewise, a special thanks is due to the following sponsors and volunteers that made the TXMPA trip and related outcomes possible:

WHAT NEXT?

Between now and the beginning of the 2009 legislative session (in January), the TXMPA North Texas Regional Committee and Dallas Producers Association are organizing an initiative focused on our State Representatives and Senators.  The purpose of this pre-legislative session initiative is to have TXMPA members meet directly with their State Representatives on the home-front and to ask for their support of the Moving Image Industry Incentive legislation.  More to come on this topic.

The TXMPA North Texas Regional Committee will be conducting a regional meeting in August.  Logistics information such as date, time and location is forthcoming.
