“From Ingenue to Studio Head: How Does Age Affect
Women in the Film Industry?”
One of Hollywood’s most enduring and iron clad rules is
don’t get old. Our panel of experts agreed that more scrutiny is paid to the
progress of women in the entertainment and media industries because of the
belief that these fields have power to influence our perception. It seems the
gender of people behind the scenes and on the screens does affect our society as
a whole.
Sarah Harris of AFI DALLAS Programming moderated a diverse panel of
accomplished women that included: Deidra Edwards, Staci Lawrence, Socheato Poev,
Kim Clemons, and Lynn Roth.
Each spoke candidly, sharing personal experiences with the audience for
inspiration. Perhaps Ms. Roth summarized it best by explaining that beyond age
and gender, it is really an issue of being confident without being labeled a
“bitch”. Entering every situation with the strength of your own conviction and
being prepared yet flexible, commands respect from both sexes. Self-assuredness
can alter the cultural perception of women and aging in a society that has long
revered youth to one that respects the wisdom and grace that comes from life’s
experiences.
Thanks AFI Dallas, our WIF.D Board and all the panelists for their participation. Check out the photos here.
