PSA for Gilda's Place to Air |
WIF.Dallas Donates Public Service Announcement
Posted 2/18/2003
Women
in Film.Dallas has produced it's first Public Service Announcement
(PSA) for "Gilda's Club: A Special Place," which begins airing in the
Dallas area in early March, and nationwide on HD Net, and is positioned
for worldwide release in foreign languages for overseas markets.
Gilda's Club Worldwide was selected as the group's choice to raise
public awareness for help available for women suffering from cancer, in
remembrance of Gilda Radner, the actress who died of ovarian cancer.
The goal of this PSA is to reach those people who can benefit in
knowing about Gilda's Club, and relay Gilda's wish: that no one should
have to face cancer alone.
The 30-second spot's two producers, Betty Buckley and June Owens,
chaired the PSA committee. "Interestingly, all of the committee
members' lives had been touched in some way by cancer, so the decision
to work with Gilda's Club was unanimous," says Buckley.
Highlights include actress Meryl Streep, who graciously donated her
time to do the background voice over while she was promoting her latest
film, Adaptation. In addition, a stellar cast and crew of 60 people
from Dallas donated their time, along with some members of Gilda's
Club, several children referred by Children's Medical Center, and
Suzanne Ahn, respected physician and lung cancer activist.
In a letter to Gilda's North Texas Executive Director Susan
Lindeman, member Paula Doyle shared her feelings of the day, "Everyone
I came in contact with at the filming was genuinely nice and
considerate. The make-up woman (Donatelle), a fourteen year cancer
survivor, was brought to tears as she shared some of her feelings with
a room full of people. This amazing woman gave me eyebrows! As she
taught me how to create my own eyebrows, she gave me a pep talk that
raised my spirits more than she will ever know. All of the crew members
and the actors made me feel so comfortable. Everyone was so easy to
talk to, I felt as though I already knew each of them."
Women in Film.Dallas and all the members of the PSA committee would
like to extend a special thanks to all the people and companies
involved in this production to make a difference in the lives of
others.
